Section 1: General
There are four membership categories: regular members, associate members, supporting partners, and life members. Regular members of NYSSIU must also be members of IASIU.
Section 2: Definitions and Qualifications
A. Regular Members
A regular member must meet one of the following criteria:
- An insurance company employee whose primary role is full-time investigation of insurance fraud or supervision of those investigations.
- An employee of a self-insured corporation assigned to a Special Investigation Unit whose primary role is full-time investigation or supervision of insurance fraud investigations.
- An agent of the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).
B. Associate Members
An associate member must meet one of the following criteria:
- A local, state, or federal law enforcement officer involved in or providing expertise or services for the investigation or prosecution of insurance fraud.
- A local, state, or federal agency employee involved in or providing expertise or services for the investigation or prosecution of insurance fraud.
- A local, state, or federal prosecutor involved in or providing expertise or services for the prosecution of insurance fraud.
- A full-time investigator or investigations supervisor with the New York State Insurance Frauds Bureau.
- An insurance company employee involved in or providing expertise or services for the investigation of insurance fraud.
- An employee of a third-party administrator or general agency involved in or providing expertise or services for the investigation of insurance fraud.
C. Supporting Partners
Supporting partners must meet the following qualification:
- An owner or employee of a business that provides specialized expertise or services to insurers, prosecutors, or government agencies for detecting, investigating, or preventing insurance fraud.
D. Life Members
Life members are nominated by any regular member and approved by a two-thirds vote of the Board of Directors. Minimum qualifications:
- The individual must have been a regular or associate member of NYSSIU for at least ten years.
- The individual must have provided distinctive service to NYSSIU, such as committee participation or serving as an officer or director for at least five years.
Life membership recognizes outstanding contributions by regular or associate members who meet these requirements. Life members have all rights and privileges of regular members and are exempt from annual dues. Nominations may be submitted at any time, and approved life memberships take effect at the next quarterly meeting following the board vote.
NYSSIU encourages all members to actively participate in IASIU and other state or local anti-fraud organizations.
